Ramin Karimloo Cast in Anastasia Broadway Musical

Ramin Karimloo, who played Jean Valjean in the latest revival of “Les Miserables,” has been cast in “Anastasia,” the new Broadway musical based on 20th Century Fox‘s 1997 animated film.

Karimloo, currently on the West End in “Murder Ballad” and set to play Bolshevik general Gleb in “Anastasia,” joins a cast that already includes Christy Altomare (playing the young woman who may or may not be a lost Russian duchess) as well as Derek Klena, John Bolton and Caroline O’Connor.  Composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens pen the score, with original songs filling out the tunes they originally wrote for the animated film, with Terrence McNally on board to write the book. Darko Tresnjak (“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”) directs.

Following a tryout run in Connecticut earlier this year, “Anastasia” will move to Broadway for an engagement that begins previews March 23 and opens April 24. A teaser trailer for the production was released earlier this week on the show’s Facebook page, and racked up some six million views in 48 hours (with the tally now weighting in at nearly seven million) — all large numbers for a Broadway production.

The New York staging of “Anastasia” is produced by Stage Entertainment USA, Bill Taylor and Tom Kirdahy Productions.
